in the beginning…

I love to read.

I especially love to read stories or books that hook me immediately.

It’s that first line thing.

Rose Macaulay wrote my all time favorite first line in The Towers of Trebizon – ““Take my camel, dear,” said my Aunt Dot, as she climbed down from this animal on her return from High Mass.”

I couldn’t wait to know Aunt Dot!

What’s your favorite  first line?

  1. “I was sitting in a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster.” Jeannette Walls – Glass Castles

  2. I don’t know why, but the one that I always remember the best is: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderly again.” (Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier) Of course you have to say it in your head with a British “Masterpiece Theatre” accent!

  3. that was SUCH a powerful story. thanks for the nudge back to that book, Carol!
