One of my rituals for each new year is to choose a word to influence me for the year. My word for 2011 is EXPERIMENT. To support my EXPERIMENTAL focus, I commit to post the results of a new experiment each Sunday of this year.
As I mentioned last week, I unplugged from my computer this past week.
This ‘experimental year’ blog series has surprised me in a lot of ways. One of the biggest surprises has been the number of private e.mails I’ve gotten from some of you following the blog. THANKS! A number of you have e.mailed that it seems most of my experiments have involved depriving myself of something.
Well, even though going without my computer connection this week might SEEM like deprivation ~ it wasn’t!
Here’s the gig. I was in western Maine all week. While I did stay connected (minimally) via phone and text, I made the decision NOT to tune into e.mail, Facebook or even google.
And ya know what? My friends & family carried on without me. My business carried on without me. The world carried on without me.
Soooooo as summer vacation season settles in and if you’ve never tried unplugging during yours, I hope you’ll consider giving it a try. IT really will all still be here when you get home. And you’ll see IT with a renewed spirit because you were present to what was in front of you while you were away.
What do ya say?
Lisa- I am SOOOO with you on unplugging every now and then!!! IT has taken me a bit of doing, but over the last year, I have learned to turn off my work email at 5pm on Fridays and not turn it back on until I get to work on Monday morning. That was one of the most liberating, and personal time protection strategies I have ever used!!! IT has become a habit of my life now!!!!
And when my summer courses are finished, and I have one full week of vacation before beginning the fall 2011, I will unplug as well!!!!!!
I’m glad you had such a good unplugged week. And I hope your vacation was great as well!!!! Judi
