hearing raindrops and pins drop…

My word for this year is LEARN.

So it just makes sense to use this Year of Sundays to reflect on 52 of my most significant Life Lessons.   Some may seem more significant than others, but each one has changed how I live my life in powerful way.   I’d love to hear if and how any of these same lessons have surfaced in the classroom of Your Life.

lesson48Being Silent with other people can be so much cooler than being Silent alone.

As I write this, I’m tucked away at one of my favorite places on the planet.  It’s called Pelican House and is a retreat space affiliated with Trinity Center in Pine Knolll Shores, NC.  For the past I’m not sure how many years, I’ve spent the first week or two of  December here.  I spend most of my time here in Silence and I share this space with people who come here to also expereince some stillness and quiet.

My lifetime best friend teases that there’s no way she could spend a week or two in Silence.  Maybe she could, maybe she couldn’t.  It’s not for everyone, but for the people it IS for – it’s essential.

I believe Silence is our natural state.  It seems we humans learn to make noises to describe what’s happening in our hearts and  minds.   Sometimes,  we put more energy into the describing than into the what’s happening.  It’s indescribably holy to be with other humans who simply give one another a time and space where descriptions are not needed.

Right now, there are ten people in this nine bedroom, ocean front house.  It’s raining and a cold front is making the fire in the fireplace especially appealing.  Four of us are in the living room.  One person is staring at the fire.  One is reading.  One is writing in a journal.  And I’m writing this blog post.

As soon as I finish this post, I’ll close my laptop and get back to the Silence.  You may or may not hear from me next Sunday.  If you don’t, trust that I send you all ALL that is good ~ very quietly.

In the meantime, what’s Being Silent like for you?

  1. “In silence there is eloquence. Stop weaving and see how the pattern improves.” – Rumi

Since I cannot ponder the silence this morning in my house full of children and dogs, I will leave you with a quote. I hope you return to the lake refreshed and restored. Namaste.

  2. I confess to an enormous dollop of envy, wishing I was there, too. But instead of indulging that ;-), I will thank God that you are there and relish the hours of silence I have today. In fact, you’ve inspired my day! Thanking God for you and for silence.
