My word for 2020 is ENOUGH.
It’s such a great word and realization. And it’s so versatile!
- I can use it while standing tall, with clenched fists and lots of exclamation points. “Enough of THAT!!!”
- I can use it when I remember to put Fear in the back seat. So I can get on with Life. “Enough, already.”
- I can use it when no matter how I try, things just don’t turn out as I planned or wanted. So I can allow a glimmer of grace to creep-in and flip my compassion switch ON. “:: deep sigh:: Enough.”
- I can also use it when God/The Universe/and Everything Good presents one of those gobsmacking moments of awe and love. “THIS is enough.”
In case you haven’t heard, we’re holding a big election in the U.S., this Tuesday. 😜
There’s a lot of division. To help me narrow that, I’ve been seeking teachers I might not usually turn to for lessons. People who know me well, know that I’m a Pirate (ECU)/Blue Devil (Duke). So, you might be surprised by the lesson that’s helping me the most these days.

Dean Smith (UNC – Chapel Hill) was a great human and a legendary coach. And, in the spirit of being a part of bridging.the.divide, I will be taking these words of his to heart, in the coming days, weeks, months, and years.
I imagine a lot of people I love and respect will vote as I vote.
I imagine a lot of people I love and respect will vote differently than I.
I imagine a lot of people I love and respect won’t vote.
So, in the days, weeks, months, and years to come, I’m going to continue to say what I mean and reserve my thoughts for myself, my journal, my spiritual director, and my ballot.
And I’m going to continue to honor all those people I love and respect. For me, that’s enough.
How have you witnessed or experienced enough, lately?
